Directions to the Town of Middlefield Historical Association
and the Old District No. 1 Schoolhouse
Since 1875, the Middlefield District No. 1 Schoolhouse has been the center of education, local history and community activities. Visit our unique rural museum in the hamlet of Middlefield, six miles east of Cooperstown, New York.
From Interstate 88 and the Oneonta area
Exit the interstate at the Cooperstown/Colliersville exit number 17, head north on Route 28. Continue for approximately 9 miles to Milford. Turn right onto State Route 166. Continue north another 10 miles and you will see a blue sign for the Old Schoolhouse Museum and a green sign for Middlefield and the municipal buildings pointing right on to County Route 35. Drive to the bridge over the Cherry Valley Creek. The Museum driveway and sign is immediately on the left after crossing the bridge.
From Cooperstown
Drive southeast on Susquehanna Avenue past the village line and the Clark Sports Center. Cross over the Bowerstown Bridge then bear to the left on County Route 52, up and over Murphy Hill to Route 166. Turn left onto State Route 166 and proceed north 1.5 miles to the intersection of County Route 35. You will see a blue sign for the Old Schoolhouse Museum and a green sign for Middlefield and the municipal buildings pointing right on to County Route 35. Drive .5 miles to the bridge over the Cherry Valley Creek. The museum driveway and sign is immediately on the left after crossing the bridge.
From Route 20 and the Cherry Valley area
From east or west, exit State Route 20 for Cherry Valley and drive into the village to the traffic light. Turn south onto State Route 166. Drive approximately 10miles to the intersection of County Route 35. You will see a blue sign for the Old Schoolhouse Museum and a green sign for Middlefield and the municipal buildings pointing left on to County Route 35. Drive .5 miles to the bridge over the Cherry Valley Creek. The museum driveway and sign is immediately on the left after crossing the bridge.
